Ladeira d'Joana Geosite
A Journey into the Geological Past of the Blue Mountains of Mação
Located near the village of Pé da Serra, on the eastern flank of the Amêndoa-Carvoeiro Synform, the Ladeira d'Joana Geosite is one of the most remarkable geological landmarks in the Municipality of Mação.
This site is characterized by impressive outcrops of metagreywackes, often occurring in thick amalgamated beds several tens of metres thick, interlayered with metasiltstones and metapelites. These rocks preserve the memory of ancient marine environments that existed hundreds of millions of years ago and provide valuable insights into the geological evolution of this part of the Iberian Peninsula.
🌍 Long before the appearance of villages, castles, or even human settlement, this region lay beneath ancient oceans. Over vast geological timescales, sediments accumulated on the seabed and were later compressed, folded, and transformed by powerful tectonic forces that shaped the mountains and landscapes we see today.
🪨 The Amêndoa-Carvoeiro Synform is a geological structure of great scientific importance, recording the intense deformation processes that affected these rocks during the formation of the Iberian Massif. The Ladeira d'Joana Geosite offers an excellent opportunity to observe these structures in the field, making it a true open-air classroom for geology enthusiasts, students, researchers, and visitors alike.
🏞️ Set within the magnificent landscape of the Blue Mountains of Mação, this geosite also provides beautiful views over the surrounding hills and valleys. The combination of geology, nature, and tranquillity creates a unique experience, allowing visitors to appreciate a landscape whose origins date back hundreds of millions of years.
🚶 Its proximity to the hiking trails promoted by Rotas de Mação enables walkers to discover this geological heritage while exploring traditional rural paths that cross some of the most scenic areas of the parish of Amêndoa.
✨ More than a collection of rocks, the Ladeira d'Joana Geosite is a gateway to understanding the origins of the mountains, valleys, and landscapes that define this remarkable territory.
