🌿🚶♂️ Ortiga Boardwalks 🌊☀️
The Ortiga Boardwalks 🌿, integrated into the municipal hiking trail Rotas de Mação - PR4 MAC Ortiga Path 🚶♀️🚶♂️, extend along the right bank of the Tagus River 🌊, at the foot of the village of Ortiga 🏡. This trail offers a unique opportunity to experience nature and local heritage, providing privileged views over the river, the traditional fishing structures 🎣 and the iconic Tagus Lagoons 💧.
The main objective of this project is to reconnect people with the river 🤝🌊 while preserving and promoting the stories, memories and way of life of the local communities, particularly that of Ortiga ❤️. For decades, fishing 🎣 was the primary source of livelihood for many families, becoming not only an economic activity but also a deeply rooted tradition and a symbol of the local cultural identity.
The route begins with a traditional footpath 🚶 linking the Fishermen’s Quarter 🛶 to the Tagus Lagoons 💦. Along the way, visitors reach the Dam Viewpoint 📸, located next to the Beira Baixa Railway Line 🚂, offering outstanding views over the Tagus River 🌊 and one of the region’s most important hydroelectric infrastructures ⚡.
From the Tagus Lagoons 💧, the trail takes on a new character as it enters the central section of the wooden boardwalks 🌳 that encircle Boavista Hill ⛰️, one of the most emblematic locations in Ortiga. This area is home to the Boavista Viewpoint , which provides breathtaking panoramic views over the Tagus Valley 🌄 and the surrounding landscape, as well as the Boavista Picnic Area 🍃🧺, a pleasant space for rest and leisure where hikers and visitors can enjoy the tranquillity of the natural surroundings.
From this point onwards, the trail leads to the ancient traditional fishing structures 🎣 and the Tagus Lagoons 💦, located on the outskirts of Ortiga 🏡, in an area where livestock farming 🐑🐐 has always shaped the landscape and where generations of young people enjoyed swimming 🏊♂️ in the river during the warm summer months ☀️.
Part of the route is developed on elevated wooden boardwalks 🌉, while other sections follow the historic paths 🚶♂️ once used daily by fishermen and their families, who relied on the river for their livelihood and maintained a strong connection with the Tagus River 🌊.
More than just a hiking trail 🚶♀️, the Ortiga Boardwalks 🌿 are a tribute to the riverside communities ❤️, their traditions 🏞️ and their centuries-old relationship with the river 🌊. They offer visitors an authentic experience where nature 🌳, heritage 🏛️, history 📜 and memory ✨ come together in perfect harmony, revealing some of the most beautiful natural landscapes in the municipality of Mação ☀️🌄💚.
