🏛️📚 Museum of Mação: Where Knowledge Meets Memory
A Museum Born from Discovery and Research
The Museum of Mação is today a nationally and internationally recognised institution in the fields of archaeology, heritage studies, territorial management and the relationship between science and society.
Its story began on 6 March 1943, with the discovery of the famous Porto do Concelho Treasure, a remarkable collection of Bronze Age artefacts that revealed the extraordinary archaeological wealth of the region. ⛏️🏺
A few years later, in 1946, archaeological investigations at the Castelo Velho do Caratão further demonstrated the significance of Mação's heritage and laid the foundations for the creation of a museum dedicated to preserving, studying and sharing this invaluable historical legacy.
At the centre of this vision was Dr. João Calado Rodrigues, a physician, researcher and humanist who became the driving force behind Mação's museum project. Convinced that heritage should be shared with local communities, he dedicated much of his life to the study and promotion of local history, dreaming of a museum capable of safeguarding and communicating the collective memory of Mação. 🏛️📖
Although he did not live to see his vision realised, his legacy was continued by Dr. Maria Amélia Horta Pereira, whose leadership proved fundamental in the creation and inauguration of the Municipal Museum.
🔬 Science, Community and Heritage
Under the guidance of Dr. Maria Amélia Horta Pereira, the museum consolidated an innovative approach based on three fundamental pillars:
🏺 Research and promotion of archaeological and historical collections;
🤝 A strong connection with the local community;
📚 Scientific research and dissemination of knowledge.
During this period, new archaeological excavations, historical studies and research projects were carried out, helping to create a comprehensive understanding of the municipality's cultural and natural heritage.
The museum established itself not merely as an exhibition space, but as a centre for knowledge, research and community participation. 🌿📜
🎓 An International Academic and Research Hub
From 2001 onwards, a new phase began, characterised by a strong commitment to internationalisation, applied research and collaboration with higher education institutions.
Working closely with the Polytechnic University of Tomar, the Museum of Mação became part of national and international scientific networks, promoting research projects, advanced training programmes and academic exchange initiatives. 🎓🌍
This innovative approach enabled the museum to:
✅ Attract students, researchers and specialists from various disciplines;
✅ Develop projects funded by the European Union;
✅ Create international research teams operating across several continents;
✅ Consolidate a research centre recognised for excellence;
✅ Strengthen Mação's role as a laboratory for heritage and territorial studies.
The museum's scientific reach is particularly remarkable, encompassing specialists in:
🔬 Archaeology;
🦴 Anthropology;
📜 History;
🌍 Geology;
📡 Geographical Engineering;
🌿 Biology;

🌍 Mação on the International Stage
Over the past decades, the museum has evolved into a respected institution extending far beyond the boundaries of the municipality.
The continuous growth in visitor numbers, the quality of its scientific output and the development of innovative projects have helped establish Mação as a centre of excellence in heritage studies and territorial management.
Particularly noteworthy is the creation of several Memory Spaces in different parishes of the municipality, developed in close collaboration with local communities to preserve traditions, knowledge and collective memory for future generations. ❤️🏡
