✝️ Saint Michael the Archangel, Prince of the Heavenly Hosts
Saint Michael the Archangel is one of the most important figures in Christian tradition, honoured as the commander of the heavenly armies and the great defender of good against evil. His name derives from the Hebrew Mikha'el, meaning “Who is like God?”, a proclamation of humility and fidelity to the Creator. 🌟
In biblical tradition, Saint Michael appears as God's warrior, fighting the forces of evil and protecting the faithful. He is especially known from the Book of Revelation, which describes the heavenly battle in which Saint Michael and his angels defeat the dragon, a symbol of evil, and cast it out of Heaven. 📖⚔️
For this reason, Saint Michael is often depicted holding a sword or spear, triumphing over a dragon or serpent beneath his feet, symbolising the victory of good over evil. 🗡️🐉
Throughout the centuries, Saint Michael has become one of the most venerated saints in Christianity and is regarded as:
🛡️ Protector of the Church;
⚖️ Defender of justice and truth;
👼 Guardian and guide of souls;
🙏 Intercessor of the faithful before God;
⛰️ Protector of elevated and sacred places, which explains why many churches, chapels and shrines dedicated to him were built on hills and prominent points in the landscape.
In Portugal, devotion to Saint Michael dates back to the Middle Ages and can be found in numerous churches, chapels and religious celebrations. His feast day is celebrated on 29 September, when many communities continue to honour the one traditionally known as the Prince of the Angels. 🎉⛪
