🌉🏛️ Del Rei Roman Bridge
A Bridge Between History and Landscape
Located in the municipality of Mação, the Del Rei Roman Bridge stands as one of the most remarkable testimonies to the ancient routes and human occupation that have shaped this territory over the centuries.
Listed in the Architectural Heritage Inventory (IPA 00003401), this historic bridge preserves the memory of the connections that, since antiquity, linked communities, markets and territories through an extensive network of roads crossing the Iberian Peninsula.
🏛️ A Legacy of Roman Origins
According to heritage studies, the bridge was probably constructed between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD, most likely forming part of an important Roman road connecting Olissipo (present-day Lisbon) and Emerita Augusta (modern Mérida, Spain), following the right bank of the Tagus River.
This route was integrated into the vast Roman road network that facilitated the movement of people, goods, military forces and information throughout the Empire, playing a vital role in the economic and administrative development of the region.
Although tradition attributes the bridge to the Roman period, specialists acknowledge that its exact chronology remains uncertain. The use of roughly dressed granite and schist blocks makes precise dating difficult, leading to the possibility that the structure is Roman in origin with later medieval repairs, or alternatively a fully medieval construction inspired by earlier Roman engineering traditions.
🌉 Architecture and Engineering
The Del Rei Bridge displays a distinctive structural design that reflects different construction phases throughout its long history.
Its most notable features include:
✅ Two arches of unequal size and shape;
✅ One semi-circular arch typical of Roman engineering;
✅ One pointed arch on the downstream side, associated with medieval reinforcement works;
✅ A gently sloping deck;
✅ Stone parapets along the sides;
✅ Upstream cutwaters designed to reduce the force of flowing water;
✅ An iron tie rod reinforcing the pointed arch.
The central pier, measuring approximately 2.40 metres wide, demonstrates the robustness required to withstand centuries of floods and water erosion.
⚔️ Between Rome and the Middle Ages
The evolution of the bridge provides an excellent example of how historic infrastructures were adapted to meet the needs of successive generations.
Archaeologists and historians suggest that during the 13th and 14th centuries, a significant structural intervention took place through the construction of the pointed downstream arch. This reinforcement may have extended the bridge's lifespan and improved its capacity to accommodate changing patterns of movement and transportation.
As a result, the Del Rei Bridge today represents a fascinating combination of Roman engineering and medieval adaptation, reflecting more than two thousand years of history.
