This is a rich area from the point of view of the geological heritage of the municipality of Mação. In the Cortiço Valley, the metagrave and schist benches have aspects that suggest that they were "baked" in a high temperature oven.
The intrusion of granite, from a magmatic chamber, in alternating layers of metagraveques and shales, has originated alterations of the original minerals of the metamorphic rocks that fit for others that are generated at the highest temperature, consequence of its strong recrystallization by thermal action (temperatures between 800º and 1000ºC).
