Vale Cortiço is one of the most geologically significant areas in the municipality of Mação, preserving remarkable evidence of the processes that shaped this region over millions of years. ⏳🔬
👀 The outcrops of metagreywackes and schists display distinctive characteristics suggesting that these rocks were subjected to extremely high temperatures, as if they had been "baked" inside a giant natural furnace. 🔥🪨
🌋 This phenomenon resulted from the intrusion of granitic magma rising from a deep magmatic chamber. As the magma penetrated alternating layers of metagreywackes and schists, it released enormous amounts of heat, causing significant transformations in the surrounding rocks.
🌡️ Under temperatures estimated between 800 °C and 1000 °C, the original minerals underwent intense recrystallisation, forming new mineral assemblages that are stable under high-temperature conditions. This process, known as contact metamorphism, left visible geological features that can still be observed today. 🔬⚒️
