On October 5, 2021, the requalification works of the Largo dos Combatentes Square, in Mação, were inaugurated.
Vasco Estrela, Mayor of Mação, stressed the importance of "the symbolic act" and said that the renovation of the square "is a work that dignifies the town of Mação, dignifies the county and also dignifies the memory of those who the county of Mação honors with the two monuments" in the space.
The Largo dos Combatentes has two monuments that immortalize the combatants from the municipality of Mação who lost their lives in episodes of conflict, either in the Overseas War or in World War I.
"We thought of doing these works, also in the sequence of the requalification of the Municipal Theater, to create a more harmonious space, more inviting to be enjoyed by people, where people can also socialize. A space that can serve as a union and centrality in the town of Mação", said the mayor.
For Vasco Estrela, "it was a well accomplished work, probably with some divergent opinions about some of its characteristics". However, he stated that "we tried to do our best to leave a pleasant space for people to socialize".
The mayor recalled that the Jardim dos Combatentes is the third requalification of "emblematic places and buildings in the town" made in the current municipal mandate, after the works in the old fire station "where today operates a social response for children and young people with disabilities" and the Cineteatro, which, according to the mayor, will be inaugurated "by the end of the year".
"I think, therefore, that today we have a more beautiful, more attractive town and we are all, the Mace community, to be congratulated. I hope that everyone can feel this space as their space, where we can live moments of joy, of culture, but more than that, that it can serve to unite us and that we can share many moments here where we all feel good", said Vasco Estrela.
The president then asked that "you can pass the word and say that Mação is today a more beautiful town. It is our town, it is always the most beautiful town because it is ours.
The afternoon included a concert by Sociedade Filarmónica União Maçaense (SFUM), with the special participation of the fado singer Carolina Siborro, who performed accompanied by the Filarmónica Band conducted by Joel Rodrigues.
The concert was part of the "Music and Monuments" festival promoted by the Portuguese Musical Confederation, which SFUM joined.
