THE PATH

The PR11 MAC – Matas and Ocreza Estuary Path invites visitors to discover one of the most beautiful landscapes in the municipality of Mação. Starting in the village of São José das Matas, the route follows forest tracks, rural paths and traditional trails crossing hills, valleys and slopes overlooking the Ocreza River and the Tagus River.

Throughout the walk, visitors experience a succession of contrasting environments, ranging from dense woodland areas to agricultural landscapes and natural viewpoints overlooking river valleys. The changing scenery reveals the close relationship between the land, the waterways and the communities that have shaped this territory over centuries.

This is a true borderland territory, where the landscape opens into vast horizons. From the various natural viewpoints along the route, visitors can admire kilometres of mountains, valleys and waterways, with views extending from the district of Santarém towards the neighbouring districts of Portalegre and Castelo Branco.

These are landscapes of exceptional beauty, shaped over centuries by the Tagus and Ocreza Rivers, making this route one of the most remarkable panoramic experiences in the municipality of Mação.

The path offers moments of tranquillity and contemplation, revealing an unspoilt landscape where nature remains dominant and every bend unveils new perspectives over the Ocreza and Tagus valleys.

NATURAL HERITAGE

The natural richness of the PR11 MAC – Matas and Ocreza Estuary Path is undoubtedly one of its greatest attractions. The route crosses extensive Mediterranean woodland dominated by maritime pine, cork oak, holm oak, strawberry tree, rockrose and lavender, species that shape the ecological and scenic identity of the region.

The surroundings of São José das Matas also display a strong agricultural tradition, particularly through the presence of several vineyards managed by local producers. These vineyards enrich the rural landscape and reflect a long-standing tradition of grape cultivation and wine production, contributing to both the local economy and the preservation of regional identity.

The region is also well known for its beekeeping tradition. The abundance of nectar-producing plants, including lavender, rockrose and other aromatic wild species, creates excellent conditions for producing high-quality honey. Along the route, visitors may observe several apiaries operated by local beekeepers, whose work plays a vital role in preserving biodiversity, pollinating crops and maintaining ecological balance.

One of the highlights of the route is the approach to the Ocreza Estuary, where the waters of the Ocreza River meet the majestic Tagus River. This area is exceptionally rich in biodiversity, featuring riverside habitats, riparian vegetation and excellent opportunities for wildlife observation.

From the highest points of the route, visitors can enjoy sweeping views over the remarkable Ocreza Prehistoric Art Valley, one of the region's most important landscape and archaeological treasures. The panorama also includes the reservoirs of the Pracana Dam, built on the Ocreza River, and the Fratel Dam, located on the Tagus River, whose vast water surfaces add grandeur and beauty to the landscape.

The combination of forests, rivers, dams, vineyards, apiaries and deeply carved valleys creates an outstanding nature experience, making this one of the most rewarding walking routes in the municipality of Mação.

CULTURAL HERITAGE

The village of São José das Matas is an important centre of rural heritage, preserving traditions, memories and ways of life closely linked to agriculture, forestry and the sustainable use of natural resources.

At the heart of the village stands the Church of Saint Joseph, the community's principal place of worship and the centre of its spiritual life. Dedicated to Saint Joseph, the church remains a focal point for religious celebrations and local festivities.

Nearby are other valuable elements of local heritage, including the traditional Community Oven, a reminder of the collective bread-making traditions and the spirit of cooperation that once characterised rural communities.

Close by stands the Former Primary School, a symbol of the educational and social history of several generations of local residents.

The São José das Matas Multipurpose Hall serves as an important venue for community gatherings, cultural events and recreational activities, helping to preserve local traditions and strengthen community life.

Among the most significant regional heritage landmarks are the historic Bridges of the Beira Baixa Railway Line and the Barca da Amieira-Envendos Railway Station, valuable reminders of the key role played by the railway in the economic and social development of the region. These structures recall a time when rail transport connected communities and facilitated trade and mobility.

The route also provides views over the extraordinary Ocreza Prehistoric Art Valley, one of the most important archaeological sites in the municipality of Mação, where prehistoric engravings and archaeological remains testify to human presence thousands of years ago. This remarkable heritage creates a direct link between today's landscape and the region's earliest inhabitants, giving the area exceptional historical and cultural significance.
