Walking Path

The Cross Head Path traces a circular path around the town of Mação, offering visitors the perfect way to discover both the heart of the municipality and the serene landscape that embraces it.
It is a route that blends natural heritage, spirituality, and unforgettable panoramic views.

To the north rises the majestic Cabeço da Cruz, the highest point of the trail, reaching approximately 400 meters in altitude. From here, hikers are invited to enjoy one of the most beautiful vistas over Mação, a natural viewpoint where the town unveils itself in all its splendour.

At the top stands the symbolic Cruz de Mação, one of the town’s most iconic landmarks. This is a place of serenity and contemplation — a true refuge of peace, metaphorically watched over by the wings of Saint Michael, reinforcing the spiritual atmosphere of this meaningful location.

As the trail re-enters the town, it turns southward and leads visitors along the Path of the Sacred, a cultural and religious itinerary that passes through sites deeply rooted in local devotion: Saint Anthony, Saint Benedict, the Parish Church, the Misericórdia Church, Saint Sebastian, the Encruzilhadas crosses, and the Calvary. Each of these places tells a chapter of Mação’s spiritual history and is well worth a visit.

The journey concludes at the remarkable Museum of Prehistoric and Sacred Art of the Tagus Valley, a nationally renowned space offering a fascinating journey into the region’s earliest human presence and its ancestral spirituality.

Natural Heritage

The PR1 MAC – Cross Head Path invites walkers to discover the natural heritage surrounding the town of Mação, along a trail that combines landscape, biodiversity and tranquillity, revealing the strong connection between the local community and the natural environment over time.

This route unfolds across a gently undulating landscape, where forested areas, watercourses and elevated viewpoints alternate, offering wide-ranging views over the surrounding natural scenery. The vegetation reflects the Mediterranean character of the region, with a predominance of maritime pine and eucalyptus, alongside areas of montado, where native species such as cork oak and holm oak can also be found. In the shrub layer, rosemary, rockrose and strawberry tree stand out—species that are well adapted to the climate and terrain and essential to the ecological balance and landscape identity.

Throughout the trail, the presence of water can be felt through small streams and damp areas, which play a fundamental role in sustaining local biodiversity. These riparian environments provide important habitats for a variety of bird species, amphibians and other small animals, adding significant natural value to the route.

Cultural Heritage

The town of Mação possesses a rich and diverse cultural heritage, shaped by centuries of human settlement, tradition and a close relationship with the surrounding territory. Located in a transitional region between the inland areas and the Tagus Valley, Mação has developed a distinct identity marked by rural life, religious devotion and the ingenuity of its people.

Throughout the town and its surroundings, human presence is reflected in a variety of architectural and ethnographic elements that bear witness to traditional ways of life. Churches, chapels, stone crosses and wayside shrines punctuate the landscape, revealing the importance of faith and religious expression in shaping local identity. These features, often integrated into natural settings, also hold strong symbolic and community value.

Traditional housing, with stone-built structures, whitewashed walls and narrow streets, preserves the memory of a lifestyle closely linked to agriculture, livestock farming and the sustainable use of natural resources. Communal ovens, dry-stone walls, fountains and washhouses are examples of functional heritage that, beyond their practical purpose, form an important cultural and social legacy.
